Can’t make it to tonight’s concert at the BackYard?  You can still buy a ticket, to support the cause, even if you can’t make it to Texas:
www.theBackYard.net.

Jamey Johnson, Jessi Colter and Shooter Jennings will headline the first annual Full Moon Full Life concert series on Tuesday, May 20 in Austin, Texas at The Backyard Live Oak Amphitheatre. They will be joined by several of their Texas friends, Lukas Nelson, Cody Canada, Ray Benson, Paula Nelson, Waylon Payne and more.

The live auction begins at 7:00 p.m, with the concert immediately following. Tickets are priced at $35.00 and can be purchased at www.nikkimitchellfoundation.org or www.thebackyard.net. Proceeds from the concert and auction will benefit the The Nikki Mitchell Foundation which raises funds and awareness to prevent, detect and cure Pancreatic Cancer.

The theme for this year’s Full Moon Full Life event in Austin will be “A Night Of Influence, A Celebration of Waylon Jennings and Hank Cochran.” Waylon, who died in February 2003, will be inducted into the Texas Songwriter’s Hall of Fame later this year, making this event an early celebration for the occasion. Hank Cochran, who died of Pancreatic Cancer in 2010, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this month.

The foundation’s namesake, Nikki Mitchell passed away in July 2013 of pancreatic cancer. She served as President and CEO of Waylon Jennings’ music for more than 23 years. During her tenure there, she made history of her own with the Bridge of Wings flight in 1998, where she circumnavigated the northern hemisphere as co-captain in a single engine aircraft. In December 2010, Nikki was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Taking the bull by the horns she consulted with renowned medical professionals around the country and her zeal for life throughout her 31-month battle never diminished.

Pancreatic Cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in the United States and is expected to become the 2nd leading cause of cancer death by 2020. Research for the disease receives only 2% of the National Cancer Institute’s budget. Nikki’s last dream was to save others from the devastating disease of pancreatic cancer, leading to the formation of the foundation.

Thanks to Kelly Forester, of Austin, for sharing these photos of Paula Nelson and her new friends at the Austin Pets Live! shelter in Austin.

“Today Paula Nelson visited a group that I have made my life’s passion, Austin Pets Alive! Austin, TX is the largest no-kill city for domesticated pets in the country. An all volunteer non-profit caught Paula’s attention and she too shares this passion.” — Kelly Forester

When you adopt a pet from a shelter or other rescue organization, you save a life.  Out of the 8-10 million cats and dogs that entered shelters last year, 4-5 million were euthanized. Whether a purebred or mixture of various breeds,  Austin Pets Alive! believes that they all deserve a second chance!

Many, many animals that enter shelters are highly adoptable but the shelters do not have the kennel space, staff, funding, or time to find all these pets homes.  They just do not get the exposure they need to find the right home.  APA! provides that exposure through the adoption events that we attend each week.  We bring your next pet to you!

By adopting from APA!, you make room for us to help another dog or cat in need and you become part of the big picture to answer the growing problem of homeless pets in Austin and throughout United States.   At the smallest picture level, you become a hero to that pet, and that just feels good.

“I knew I loved Paula Nelson, but now knowing how compassionate she is for animal rescue has made me love her even more. What an amazing soul! Here are a few pics of Paula today at APA. For anyone interested in donations or information, please look us up at AustinPetsAlive.org. A city leading the charge to a national issue. All is takes is a voice! Thank you, Paula, for joining our fight to save these lives!”

Mahatma Gandhi said the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. Austin is certainly a city to be proud of.

We can thank Austin Pets Alive! for pushing our great city to become the LARGEST NO KILL CITY IN THE US where we save over 90% of animals that enter the city shelter. Without APA!, the save rate would only be 78%.

The animals that APA! saves are the pets that are hardest to adopt and most in need of a home. They need to be in the heart of Austin where everyone can see them.

There is a city council meeting on June 12th that will decide how the city will move forward with revamping Lamar Beach.

We need to speak up and let them know we value the work APA! has done and what they continue to do.

Please support Austin Pets Alive! as a stakeholder in the Master Plan for Lamar Beach. It is critical, for Austin and the pets in our community, that Austin Pets Alive’s Headquarters is rebuilt at Lamar Beach.

Here’s what you can do….

  • Attend the Austin City Council meeting on June 12th
  • Email council members all at once at this link: to show your support for APL
  • Tell your friends!

Thanks,
Willie Nelson
